The Los Angeles Astronomical Society (LAAS) was founded in 1926 and strives to advance the knowledge of astronomy, optics, and the wonders of our universe. We do this via public outreach activities that include star parties for schools, scouting, libraries, etc. Our most prominent event is the monthly public star party at Griffith Observatory where thirty or more LAAS members use their personal telescopes to share views with the public. These personal telescopes are augmented by a large telescope that is owned by the LAAS. We also host a public star party in Silverlake every Thursday evening, and we operate the Garvey Ranch Observatory in Monterey Park. That facility is open for public viewing every Wednesday night and features a free drop-in clinic for anyone who wants advice on purchasing or using a telescope they just acquired. These interactions provide a tremendous opportunity for increasing scientific literacy.

We are also configuring our dark sky site with remote viewing capability so that during our outreach events, we can, in real time, show the public what they are missing in the night sky because of light pollution.
